From the Publisher
The Story of Gsta Berling is a novel written by Selma Lagerlf, a Swedish author and the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. The book was originally published in 1891 and tells the story of a group of people living in Vrmland, a province in Sweden, during the 1820s. The main character, Gsta Berling, is a young and reckless minister who is forced to leave his profession due to his alcoholism. He becomes a leader of a group of outcasts who live in Ekeby, a mansion owned by a wealthy woman named Margareta Celsing. Gsta and his companions engage in various misadventures, including horse racing, gambling, and love affairs. As the story progresses, Gsta falls in love with a woman named Elisabeth, who is engaged to a wealthy man named Major Samzelius. The two lovers struggle to overcome their social differences and the disapproval of Elisabeth's family. Meanwhile, Margareta Celsing faces financial difficulties and is forced to sell her mansion, which leads to a tragic ending for some of the characters.
